To my constituents:
Now more than ever, it is important for all of us to stand up for what is right. Right now, educators are being targeted for doing what they do best: broadening their students’ understanding of the world, creating empathetic, engaged citizens capable of embracing discomfort and thinking critically. HB1775 is not only poorly written, but it has already been applied in questionable ways to win political points for state lawmakers and other elected officials.
The effect of this unjust and regressive law is a haze of fear that has already cost our city at least one highly-qualified educator. While that fear is justified in these difficult times, I want to make it clear where I stand. I oppose this heinous legislation and all other attacks on teachers, on the quality of your children’s education, and on the concept of local control. I have and will continue to fight for equitable and effective supports for our teachers as we all navigate this new and unsettling legal landscape. I urge you to join me in the fight for high-quality education for every student by making our Norman values known to every decision maker however you can. Get involved in local elections, volunteer in your PTA, and serve on local committees. Together, we are stronger than we are alone.
