Norman, OK --- Alex Ruggiers, a Curriculum Developer at OU’s Center for Public Management, a former Norman Public Schools teacher, and a lifelong Norman resident, is running for the NPS Board of Education in Office 2. After years of teaching, Alex was motivated by his experiences in NPS to leave the profession and seek a position on the school board, aiming to create change from the top down.
Alex attended Norman Public Schools and the University of Oklahoma, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in Language Arts Education. Alex began teaching in Norman Public Schools at Norman High and then Longfellow Middle School. During his time as a teacher, he earned his Masters in Instructional Leadership and Academic Curriculum.
By becoming a teacher, Alex joined the tradition of his family by contributing to the culture of learning in Norman. His grandfather, Dr. Paul Ruggiers, served as the first director of the OU Honors Program (now the Honors College) and began the ongoing Variorum Chaucer project at OU. His aunt, Dr. Ruth Loeffler was a beloved teacher at Norman High for decades and educated thousands of Norman students in her lifetime. Alex followed in his family’s footsteps, first becoming a Teacher’s Assistant in for Special Education, then as a teacher in Norman, and now as a Curriculum Developer at OU.
As a board member, Alex will bring his experience as a k-12 teacher to the position, cut wasteful spending, and bring a modernized perspective to the Norman Public School Board. If elected, Alex would be the youngest and first out LGBTQ+ member serving Norman Public Schools.
The primary election will be February 8th. If no candidate receives 50% of the vote, a runoff election will be held on April 12th.
